Russian media offensive:Pre and Post-Crisis Kyrgyzstan

Caspian Weekly - Russian media and State controlled TV channels recent emergence in the Kyrgyz Republic reflects on growing pattern of destructive "soft power" managed and streamed from Russia. Kyrgyzstan has been rocked by instability since April 2010 raising reasonable concern in Central Asian region, particularly in Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. Both states share a sizable chunk of borderline with the Kyrgyz Republic. Russian newspapers, media and TV stations had not shown signs of excessive interest in political processes in Kyrgyzstan for a few years since March 2005 uprising when first Kyrgyz President Akayev had been thrown as a result of massive unrest in the country.

Following years under new President Bakiyev most often Russian media had scratched the surface of Kyrgyz political scene with a little or no attention concentrating view on American/NATO air base Manas in Bishkek. The Kremlin controlled TV channel "Russia1" aired a program in April 2009 negatively portraying air base and accusing Americans in heroin drug trafficking from Afghanistan. Moreover, a list of accusations was completed with illegal human trafficking and wide scale tech surveillance activities conducted by Western intelligence services from Manas base.
